Prote​cting yourself as a Job Seeker in the Midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Australia

Are you looking for a job? Getting lots of input and advice from people around you? 

Overwhelmed by how stressful and challenging the actual process can be? 

Here are some suggestions which may assist you in protecting yourself as a Job Seeker!


Job seeking is tough at the best of times but right now in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic it is an incredibly challenging ongoing battle for many. I believe it is important to support genuine Job Seekers through these times of uncertainty and help to give them hope, particularly if they have lost their job suddenly because of the health and economic crisis caused by Covid-19 in Australia. Not to mention the other surrounding circumstances where some of these people may have lost loved ones at this time.

Whilst some employers are ethical and operate with integrity, the reality is that many are not in some way or the other. It has long been recognised that there is an imbalance of power in the employer/employee relationship. This balance is further tipped in times of mass job loss, high unemployment rates and economic uncertainty.

It is for these reasons and more that you may want to learn how to protect yourself as Job Seeker at this time. Here are some suggestions of ways you can do so!


Sometimes this process can be simple, effective, authentic and efficient. Other times, not so much.

Don't be afraid to ask questions throughout the recruitment process and especially in the interview if you are called for one. This way you will know what you are getting yourself into and won't waste valuable time applying to or interviewing for roles that are not suitable or not the right fit.

Observe the conduct of the employers' interview panel members. What vibes do you get at the interview? Are they realistic in their expectations? Do they seem to be playing fair? Are they respectful?

Also, look out for Red Flags! Is the interview panel or person being evasive about how the job became available, pay, conditions and other details? Transparency with these details is key.

Monetise your value and ask for what you are worth given your professional currency, which includes your knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications.


Try to connect with recruiters who conduct themselves professionally and who treat you with the respect you deserve. It is likely that this will not only be beneficial to your mental health and wellbeing but also to your long term career.

Some recruiters are ruthless and treat candidates very poorly. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon. They talk down to candidates and criticise them when they are vulnerable as opposed to giving them constructive feedback. These recruiters cannot see beyond the quickest route to making a placement and getting their commission, often crushing a candidates’ self-esteem in the process so that the candidate will fit into a box of unrealistic expectations and low pay. Anyone who has an ounce of humanity in them will recognise that this is an awful situation for the Job Seeker!

Just because you are in need of a job doesn't mean you are less of a person. It doesn't mean you are not allowed to have a choice or are incapable of making decisions.

Remain focussed on your strengths as well as your goal of finding a suitable job. Bypass people in your professional or personal life who are unhelpful, unsupportive and do not provide anything of value to your situation. You deserve much better!


Although I know that this is incredibly hard to do, do not take it personally if you are not selected. There are several reasons that may have nothing to do with you as to why you were not selected. If you are able to get any constructive feedback then that is something valuable that you can use to improve your skills. If you don't receive any meaningful feedback, then try to focus your attention on the next opportunity giving yourself time to process each experience. Most importantly, acknowledge your efforts. Just because someone hasn't given you a chance, it doesn't mean that you are not worthy of being given one!

Try not to be too hard on yourself. Practise Self-Care. Try to eat healthy, exercise and seek support from loved ones or professionals if necessary.
